Skills
Reusable instruction packs that shape how the agent works on a task
Skills
A skill is a reusable instruction pack — a Markdown document with YAML
frontmatter (name, description, allowed_tools) that is injected into the
agent's context when it's relevant. Skills are how you teach the agent how
your team works on a recurring task without repeating it in every prompt.
MCintelligentplus uses the Anthropic Skills format: the agent sees each skill's
name and description, and reads the full SKILL.md only when it decides the
skill applies.
What you get
- Built-in skills —
email-drafting,excel-generation,kb-research,meeting-prep,presentation-generation,report-writing,slack-summary. - Scopes with a precedence chain —
builtin < global < organization < workspace < personal. A more specific skill with the same slug overrides a broader one.- Personal — only your turns; guard is
chats:create. - Workspace — injected into every member's turns; guarded by a
skills:*permission (a bigger grant than editing a setting). - Organization — reaches every workspace attributed to the org, on the main agent and on specialists alike; authored by an org owner.
- Global — authored once by an instance admin and inherited by every workspace.
- Personal — only your turns; guard is
- Org-agent overrides — org-defined agents can carry their own skill overrides per workspace (see Chat Agents).
- Guardrails — skill content is screened by the prompt-injection guard, and the skills namespace is write-protected against agent self-modification.
How to enable
| Env var | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
SURFSENSE_ENABLE_SKILLS | true | Master switch for the skills middleware |
SURFSENSE_DISABLE_NEW_AGENT_STACK | false | Forces skills (and every other new-chat flag) OFF |
Skills are on by default; set SURFSENSE_ENABLE_SKILLS=false to disable
them, or use the master kill switch to roll back the whole new-chat stack.
